10 Things to Prepare Before Starting Long-Term Life in Japan

10 Things to Prepare Before Starting Long-Term Life in Japan

1. Check official documents

Confirm passport validity, visa and Certificate of Eligibility (COE). It is also helpful to prepare originals and translations of birth certificates, marriage certificates, academic records and employment records that may be needed after arrival.

2. Mobile phone

Prepare international roaming or a SIM that can be used in Japan so that you have a means of communication immediately after arrival.

3. Payment methods

Bring credit cards usable in Japan and enough cash for initial expenses. Because foreign-issued cards are not accepted everywhere, having more than one payment method is useful.

4. Family documents

Prepare documents needed for family procedures, such as children’s birth certificates, vaccination records, school documents and marriage-related documents.

5. Academic and employment records

Graduation certificates, degree certificates and employment certificates may be needed for employment or immigration procedures.

6. Daily necessities

Prepare regular medications, glasses, contact lenses and other items needed immediately. Be aware that some items are restricted when brought into Japan.

7. Driving documents

If you plan to drive in Japan, check in advance the requirements for your home-country license, international driving permit and any required translation.

8. Company capital

If you plan to manage a company in Japan, confirm the timing and method of transferring capital in advance with the professional handling the incorporation procedures.

9. Address procedures after moving in

After arrival, establish your residence and submit the required residence notification within the prescribed period. Also check procedures for resident registration, health insurance and pension.

10. Personal seal

Personal seals are still used in some procedures in Japan. Depending on your needs, preparing a seal suitable for your name can be convenient.
