For foreign nationals who want to work in Japan, one of the most important questions is which status of residence permits which type of work. The permitted scope of activities differs by status.

1. Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services
This status covers technical, humanities and international-services work that uses specialized knowledge learned at university or through professional experience. Immigration examines the relationship between the actual duties and the applicant’s education or work history, employment conditions and the employer’s business.
2. Specified Skilled Worker
This status is for work in designated industries where labor shortages have been recognized. In principle, applicants must satisfy requirements such as the relevant skills test and Japanese-language test.
3. Skilled Labor
This status covers work requiring skilled expertise, such as chefs specializing in foreign cuisine. Required years of practical experience vary by occupation.
4. Business Manager
This status is considered when managing a company or engaging in business administration in Japan. Immigration examines matters such as the place of business, business scale, business plan and continuity of operations.
5. Highly Skilled Professional
This system awards points for factors such as education, professional experience, income and age, and provides preferential treatment to qualifying highly skilled professionals. Categories differ according to the activities performed.
6. Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted
People whose primary status is not for employment, such as Student or Dependent, generally need this permission to perform part-time work within a permitted scope. Work beyond the permitted scope is not allowed.
Main matters examined in an application
- Actual job duties
- Relationship to education, major and work history
- Employment contract and salary level
- Employer’s business and stability
- Applicant’s residence history and status
Do not judge only by the job title. The appropriate status should be considered based on what work will actually be performed.
